South Florida Coastal Flood Warning Persists Through Wednesday
High tide coastal flooding peaks today and tomorrow across Palm Beach to Miami-Dade, with wind advisories also in effect.
South Florida is currently under a coastal flood warning as the region experiences significant tidal flooding, with conditions expected to peak today and tomorrow. According to the National Weather Service Office Miami-South Florida, major flooding is possible along the east coast through Wednesday. The advisory covers an area extending from Palm Beach County down to the upper Florida Keys, impacting communities including West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Homestead.
King Tides and Flooding Thresholds
The current weather event coincides with what is known as king tides. According to a forecast by the South Florida Water Management District dated Oct. 26 covering through Nov. 3, tidal water levels along the east coast are projected to remain above the National Weather Service's "Moderate Flooding" threshold in the coming days. Some locations may even approach the "Major Flooding" threshold specifically on Oct. 27 and 28.
High tides along this stretch of the Florida coastline are predicted to peak from Oct. 26 through Nov. 12, according to the forecast. In the Florida Keys, tidal water levels were near the moderate flooding threshold when the latest report was issued and could remain above the minor flooding threshold throughout the weekend.
Wind Advisories in Effect
In addition to rising waters, a wind advisory is currently active until 8 p.m. ET today for metro and coastal areas of Miami-Dade County, Broward County, and Palm Beach County. The National Weather Service expects northeast winds ranging from 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph. These conditions pose risks such as unsecured objects being blown around, tree limbs falling down, and potential power outages, as this newspaper reported in October Hurricane Threat Remains High for Central Florida Residents Despite Quiet Season.
Safety Precautions for Residents
Local authorities have issued specific safety tips for residents navigating king tide flooding. The city of Miami advises against driving through floodwater due to unseen hazards like trash and pollutants. If contact with floodwater occurs, individuals are urged to clean their skin immediately with soap and hot water.
Vehicles should not be parked in low-lying areas. Those that have already come into contact with floodwater need to be checked and cleaned thoroughly. Properties located in vulnerable zones are encouraged to utilize flood mitigation options, such as sandbags, to protect against rising waters.
