NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 62-year-old retired military veteran has died following a fatal incident at a Walmart in North Lauderdale on June 30. Bart Diguglielmo was shot just before 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the store located at 7900 West McNab Road, according to reports from the South Florida Sun Sentinel citing a Broward Sheriff’s Office news release. He was later pronounced dead at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale.

Investigation into Parking Dispute

The incident reportedly began as an argument over a parking space that escalated into violence. The woman involved remained at the scene after the shooting and told investigators she acted in self-defense, according to initial reports from the Broward Sheriff’s Office. She has not been publicly identified by authorities.

Broward Sheriff’s Office homicide detectives are currently handling the investigation. Once their inquiry is complete, the case will be turned over to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office to determine whether criminal charges will be filed against the woman involved in the shooting.

Video Evidence and Witness Accounts

The confrontation was captured on both cellphone and dashcam footage. The Sun Sentinel reported that the dashcam video shows Diguglielmo approaching the woman near her car, with the woman pointing a gun at him as he raised his arms in the air. A separate cellphone clip recorded moments before the single shot fired, capturing the woman telling Diguglielmo to "walk away." These recordings are now part of the evidence being reviewed by homicide detectives.

Family Honors Veteran’s Service

Bart Diguglielmo was originally from Hammonton, New Jersey. His sister described him as a decorated veteran who served in Desert Storm before spending 30 years working as a nurse. In an emotional interview with Local 10, cited by the New York Post, his daughter Amanda pushed back on the self-defense narrative surrounding her father's death.

"I just don't think anybody deserved to lose their life over a parking spot," Amanda said through tears. She stated that she came forward publicly because she wanted her father remembered for who he truly was, rather than how media coverage might portray him in light of the ongoing investigation into the fatal shooting.
