Officials in Florida have released new body camera footage from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) showing the aftermath of a deadly alligator attack that occurred last September in Pinellas County. The video captures first responders at the scene where 41-year-old Sabrina Peckham was killed by an alligator measuring nearly 14 feet long. According to FWC reports, officials were called to investigate and found Peckham’s body near a canal associated with McCay Creek.

Details of the Incident

The released footage shows wildlife officers wrangling the massive reptile using ropes and chains before it was shot. After the alligator was killed, officials cut it open to investigate the cause of death for Peckham. During this process, some of her remains were found inside the predator. The incident occurred in an area where Peckham had been living as a transient near the wooded areas surrounding the creek.

Community Response and Safety Measures

In the wake of the tragedy, Peckham’s daughter, Breauna Dorris, shared her grief on Facebook. She stated that it is believed her mother was walking to or from a campsite near the creek in the dark when she was attacked by the alligator emerging from the water. Following the death, FWC officials noted that alligators sometimes use this specific creek as a pathway between Ridgecrest Lake and Taylor Lake.

To prevent similar incidents, fencing and warning signs have since been installed to deter people from getting too close to the canal. A witness at the time of the attack told FOX 13 that he saw what appeared to be a lower torso in the alligator's mouth before running to alert fire department officials.
