Micron Stock Drops 12%: Opportunity Amid AI Memory Crisis

Micron Technology (NASDAQ: MU) shares experienced a significant drop of approximately 12% during the first hours of trading, dragged by a widespread movement in the technology sector. This decline has eliminated billions of dollars from its market value at the opening. However, analysts point out that this volatility appears disconnected from the long-term fundamentals of the memory chip manufacturer. While investors react to market noise, a new report from Deutsche Bank suggests that the world is heading toward a prolonged shortage of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven memory, which could turn this drop into a strategic opportunity.

The Massive Demand for AI Memory

Although much of the AI boom has focused on graphics processing units (GPUs) like Nvidia, these cannot function without large amounts of memory. Deutsche Bank argues that current demand is exerting pressure on both the HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) market, used alongside AI accelerators, and traditional DRAM markets.

The projection indicates that AI-related demand will grow so rapidly by 2030 that suppliers are likely to struggle to keep up. The problem lies in manufacturers shifting production capacity toward higher-margin products related to AI, thereby reducing the available supply for other markets.

Competitive Position and Financial Results

Micron is among the top global providers alongside SK Hynix and Samsung. The company will report its third-quarter fiscal results this Wednesday, June 24. Wall Street expects revenues of approximately $34.8 billion and earnings per share of $19.72, representing a revenue growth of 268% and an expansion in profits exceeding 930% year-over-year.

HBM production for the calendar year 2026 is effectively sold by Micron's management. Given that these chips have higher margins, as manufacturing capacity shifts toward AI-related products, profitability could improve even if the general sector supply remains restricted.

Impact on Other Sectors and Valuation

The competition for memory in data centers is affecting industries such as automotive. Modern vehicles require increasingly more semiconductors, especially for autonomous driving systems. If supply tightens further, automakers could face higher costs or delays.

For Micron, these shortages translate directly into greater pricing power. Before the current drop, the stock was trading at approximately 10 times future earnings, compared to about 17 times for Nvidia and more than 30 times for many AI infrastructure peers. Although the memory market is cyclical, the structural demand created by artificial intelligence appears to be a different fundamental driver from typical upgrade cycles.
