Florida Hurricane Season Ends Nov. 30; Unusually Quiet Year So Far
With only two months remaining, Florida experiences its quietest season since records began in 1851.
Florida’s Atlantic Hurricane Season officially concludes on Monday, November 30. As of October 2, the state has experienced an unusually quiet period with zero hurricanes impacting Florida so far this year. If no hurricanes form before the season ends, it will mark only the third time in recorded history dating back to 1851 that the Atlantic basin remains hurricane-free for a full season.
Historical Context and Record-Breaking Quiet
The last times an entirely non-hurricane Atlantic season occurred were in 1907 and 1914. While there may have been undocumented storms prior to the satellite era beginning in 1966, modern records rely on consistent observation data. Alex DaSilva, lead hurricane expert at AccuWeather, described this as one of the most extraordinary seasons in recent history.
"There is an increasingly likely scenario in which the Atlantic season ends without a single hurricane for the first time in more than a century," said DaSilva. "All of this despite sea surface temperatures being the second warmest on record for the North Atlantic basin this season."
Season Timeline and Storm Statistics
The official peak of the 2026 hurricane season passed on September 10, with activity typically peaking from mid-August through mid-October. According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) averages between 1991 and 2020, a typical Atlantic season includes approximately 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.
As of early October, the 2026 season has produced eight named tropical storms: Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly, Edouard, Fay, Gonzalo, and Hanna. None have reached hurricane status. The next storm on the official naming list is Isaias, more context in Florida’s Hurricane Risk Remains High Despite Quiet Start to 2026 Season.
What Comes Next for Florida Residents
Although the peak season has passed, warm sea surface temperatures keep risks alive through November. AccuWeather notes that waters near the U.S. continue to provide energy for potential systems even as winter approaches. The countdown clock to the end of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season is now active, with just under two months remaining before the official conclusion on Thanksgiving Monday.
