Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket suffered a spectacular and catastrophic explosion on Thursday night at its launch site in Florida. During a scheduled static fire test for the heavy-lift super booster, something went wrong immediately after engine ignition, resulting in a massive conflagration. The rocket's first stage, fueled by methane, produced an enormous fireball over the LC-36A launch site on the Florida coast. This incident is considered one of the most dramatic since the destruction of the Soviet N1 rocket in 1969.

The Incident and Blue Origin's Response

The test was being filmed by NASASpaceflight.com during its live broadcast, capturing video of the booster's destruction. It has not been immediately indicated what caused the failure during the initial stages of the test. Sources point to a problem beginning in the vehicle's engine section, which is powered by seven BE-4 engines. Jeff Bezos, founder of Blue Origin, confirmed the incident on X, stating: "It is too early to know the root cause, but we are already working to find it. It is a very difficult day, but we will rebuild whatever is necessary and fly again. It's worth it."

No injuries occurred during the failure, which sources say caused extensive damage to the company's launch infrastructure. Reports indicate that one of the lightning towers may not be recoverable and that the transporter-erector could also be irreparably damaged. The company recently began construction on a second nearby launch site, LC-36B, but work there is in its early stages.

Impact on Space Plans and NASA

This is the worst disaster in Blue Origin's history since it was founded in 2000. The company had previously launched New Glenn three times, with good performance of the first stage each time. The company demonstrated the ability to land and reuse the first stage in April. This rocket did not carry its Amazon Leo Internet satellite payload, which were safe at a nearby integration facility.

The failure has major implications for NASA and its efforts to return humans to the Moon before the end of this decade. NASA had recently selected the New Glenn rocket to deliver the first two lunar rovers in 2028. Blue Origin developed its own Blue Moon Mark 1 lunar lander, designed to fly on New Glenn, which was scheduled to launch NASA's VIPER rover next year. The New Glenn rocket is not expected to launch again in 2026, and a launch in the first half of 2027 would be considered heroic given the condition of the launch platform.
