PACHUCA, MEXICO - The South African sports ministry confirmed on Saturday that international midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25. Adams was a key figure for Bafana Bafana during their recent campaign in Mexico, featuring in all three of his country’s group stage matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The ministry did not provide an official cause of death in its statement.
A Historic World Cup Run
Adams played a pivotal role in South Africa's historic qualification for the knockout rounds, marking the first time the national team has reached this stage of the tournament. He started both Group A fixtures against Mexico and the Czech Republic. In their final group match, he came off the bench to help secure a 1-0 victory over South Korea, which secured their place in the next round where they were eventually eliminated by Canada.
Club Career and Legacy
Beyond his international success, Adams was instrumental for Mamelodi Sundowns, the Pretoria-based club he joined in January 2025. He helped lead the team to win the African Champions League title during the 2025/26 season. Before joining Sundowns, Adams developed through the youth structures at Stellenbosch FC.
“South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer,” said the South African Football Players’ Union in an official statement regarding his passing.
National Mourning
The death of Adams has prompted expressions of grief from across the nation. Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s minister of sport, issued a condolence message noting that the country mourns alongside Adams' family and teammates. He highlighted how fans watched him grow from an academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.
Adams made his senior international debut against Mozambique in 2022. Over the course of his career, he earned 13 caps for South Africa, scoring two goals during qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. While Mamelodi Sundowns and the South African Football Association did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Saturday, the football community continues to honor his contributions to the sport.
