Renner Targets Anthony Fauci Amidst Pandemic Controversy
In the final weeks leading up to Florida's Republican gubernatorial primary, former House Speaker Paul Renner has intensified his campaign strategy by directly attacking Dr. Anthony Fauci and U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds. The contest for governor is heating up less than three weeks before the August 18 election, with Renner seeking to climb in the polls while simultaneously attempting to drag down the current frontrunner.
Renner’s most aggressive moves have focused on Dr. Fauci, who served as a top medical advisor during the COVID-19 pandemic under both President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden. The controversy intensified this week after Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right not to testify before a Congressional hearing regarding allegations of gain-of-function research funding at a lab in Wuhan, China.
"Was he involved in helping a foreign adversary to produce a deadly weapon basically that was unleashed on the rest of us?" Renner asked in an interview with the News Service of Florida. "If he did something that would be an act of treason... He needs to be held accountable," Renner stated, comparing Fauci's alleged actions to those of serial killers.
Broader Republican Criticism and Political Dynamics
Renner is not alone in his criticism of the former NIH director. Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins has labeled Fauci as "one of the greatest mass murderers in American history." Meanwhile, Byron Donalds has also criticized Fauci but used the opportunity to attack Democratic frontrunner David Jolly, who praised Fauci’s efforts during the pandemic.
"In David Jolly's Florida, frauds like Anthony Fauci are put in charge. Not in my Florida," Donalds posted on X on Thursday.
Rhetoric Against Byron Donalds and DeSantis
Beyond targeting Fauci, Renner is positioning himself as a more grounded alternative to Rep. Byron Donalds. He argues that Donalds is ignoring base Republican voters by refusing to participate in debates against him, Collins, and conservative activist James Fishback.
Renner also pointed out the lack of consolidation from Governor Ron DeSantis, who remains term-limited but has not endorsed any other candidate despite being critical of Donalds. "Well, the governor obviously could help in consolidating," Renner noted, suggesting that voters are looking for an "adult in the room" to govern effectively.
Renner’s Legislative Record and Campaign Platform
To bolster his candidacy, Renner is highlighting his tenure as House Speaker from 2022-2024. He lists several major bills passed under his watch, including legalizing permitless carry of firearms, banning diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, restricting abortions after six weeks, and implementing universal vouchers.
Renner contrasts this legislative output with Donalds’ record as a former state House member who won a U.S. House seat in 2020. He claims that while he was governing, Donalds was focused on self-promotion through cable news networks to secure the governorship and potentially higher office.
"Byron Donalds... is what he'll do as governor for the next higher office," Renner said. "We need somebody who's actually going to be here to govern."
