Gators OC Buster Faulkner Defends QB Aaron Philo Ahead of Texas Clash
Offensive coordinator insists Florida's struggles extend beyond the quarterback as the team prepares for a critical SEC matchup against No. 7 Texas.
GAINESVILLE — Florida quarterback Aaron Philo has faced significant scrutiny following the Gators' recent double-digit losses, but offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner insists that Philo is not solely responsible for the team's offensive struggles. The Gators (4-2, 2-2 SEC) are preparing to face No. 7 Texas (4-1, 1-1 SEC) this Saturday at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin. Faulkner emphasized that while Philo made critical errors, the broader offensive unit has failed to execute effectively.
Contextualizing the Struggles
Faulkner acknowledged that Philo committed three bad plays during Florida's 38-19 homecoming collapse against South Carolina on Oct. 10 in Gainesville. These included two critical turnovers that shifted momentum away from the Gators. However, Faulkner noted that outside of those specific moments, Philo played within himself and made timely throws.
"I know that sounds crazy because you can't turn your ball over and that changes everything," Faulkner said on Tuesday. "But he really played within himself other than a couple plays. He was throwing the ball on time."
The contrast between Florida's early season performance and recent games is stark. In September, Philo accounted for nine touchdowns with a 73.4% completion rate as the Gators averaged 53.5 points per game. During the two losses to Missouri and South Carolina, he threw for two touchdowns and ran for another while completing 67.7% of his passes in an attack averaging just 18 points.
Beyond the Quarterback
Faulkner pointed out that Florida's inability to keep pace with opponents extends well beyond Philo's performance. The offensive line has been described as "suspect," allowing defenses to bottle up star tailback Jadan Baugh and limit down-field passing options. Star receiver Vernell Brown III remains sidelined with a knee injury, while senior speedster Eric Singleton is still recovering from a high-ankle sprain.
Singleton practiced fully for the first time since his Sept. 5 season-opening win against Florida Atlantic this Tuesday. Faulkner expressed hope that getting continuity back in the receiving corps will help ignite an offense that has struggled to generate explosive plays. The Gators recorded nine 20-yard pass completions during wins over Auburn and Ole Miss but managed only seven against Missouri and South Carolina, as this newspaper reported in Florida vs. Missouri Predictions.
Looking Ahead to Texas
The SEC's leading rusher, Baugh, has been limited to just 72 yards on 27 carries across the two losses. With backup Duke Clark also injured against South Carolina, Philo has shouldered more of the load, averaging 32 pass attempts in the past two weeks compared to 22.5 during earlier victories.
Despite calls from fans and analysts to turn to backup Tramell Jones Jr., Faulkner remains committed to his starting quarterback. He emphasized that better execution is key to returning Florida's offense to its early-season form. The Gators will look to reverse their fortunes when they travel to Austin for the 12 p.m. Saturday kickoff, with Texas favored by 8.5 points.
