Of that total, $10 million was directed to the Hope Florida Foundation, described as the charity arm of an initiative started by First Lady Casey DeSantis to connect individuals in need with nonprofit services. The foundation subsequently funneled these funds into two other nonprofits, which then transferred the money to political committees helmed by Uthmeier.
These committees used the funds to oppose specific measures on the November 2024 ballot, including proposals for abortion rights and recreational marijuana legalization. Governor DeSantis strongly opposed both measures, which ultimately failed to achieve the necessary 60 percent support required to pass.
