Officials from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) have eliminated two large alligators after a 31-year-old woman lost her life during an attack on the Econlockhatchee River, located within Little Big Econ State Forest. The incident occurred on Sunday, June 28, when the victim was swimming near the Barr Street Trailhead. Authorities have initiated DNA analysis to determine if one of the collected specimens was directly responsible for the fatal attack.
Incident details and immediate response
According to official reports, the woman was in the area with friends when they decided to swim in waters measuring approximately three feet deep. During the swim, she suffered severe bites on both arms. Her partner managed to rescue her from the animal, but she died while being transported to a nearby hospital around 1:30 p.m. In emergency recordings disseminated by local media, companions can be heard describing the severity of the injuries and the victim's critical condition before professional help arrived.
Specimen collection and forensic analysis
During a press conference in Titusville on June 29, Lieutenant Grant Eller confirmed that the two eliminated alligators measured between 12 and 13 feet in length. One was captured exactly at the scene of the incident, while the other was found nearby. Both animals were euthanized to ensure public safety. The FWC will transport biological samples to the laboratory in Gainesville, where technicians will work to accelerate the genetic identification process and confirm if one of these specimens matched the description given by witnesses.
Safety context and official warnings
Authorities emphasized that any freshwater body in Florida can harbor alligators, especially during mating season when animals may exhibit more aggressive behaviors. Lieutenant Chad Weber noted that current drought conditions and low water levels could be contributing factors to the incident, although he ruled out speculating on exact motives without concrete evidence.
Historical statistics in Florida
Despite the severity of the event, fatal attacks remain statistically rare. With an estimated population of 1.3 million American alligators in the state, historical records show that since 1948 there have been only 32 deaths from alligator attacks among more than 500 reported incidents. The previous year recorded two similar fatalities in the region.
